Five Minutes of Movement Still Counts
A reminder that small movement still supports your body, your energy, and your wellness.

There is a myth that movement only counts if it is long, intense, sweaty, or perfectly planned. I do not believe that. Five minutes of movement absolutely counts. In fact, those small moments often become the bridge back to consistency, confidence, and connection with your body.
Why five minutes matters
Five minutes can interrupt a long stretch of sitting, invite a comfortable range of motion, and give you a chance to check in with your energy and breathing. It may not feel dramatic, but it is still care. And sometimes small, repeatable care is exactly what the body responds to best.
Signs your body may be asking for movement
- You feel stiff after sitting for a long time.
- Your low back or hips feel tight from being in one position too long.
- Your shoulders feel rounded or heavy from screens, work, or stress.
- You feel sluggish and need to wake your energy up gently.
- You feel mentally cluttered and need to move some of that energy through.
- You know a full workout is not happening today, but you still want to do something supportive.
What five minutes of movement can look like
- A morning reset: gentle neck turns, shoulder circles, cat-cow, side bends, and a few hip circles before your day gets going.
- A desk break: stand up, reach overhead, twist gently, march in place, stretch your calves, and roll your wrists.
- A low-energy day: bed yoga, seated stretches, gentle breath-led movement, or a slow walk down the hallway and back.
- A mood shift: dance to one song in your kitchen, do a few supported squats to a chair, or move your arms and spine to loosen up.
- An evening wind-down: a supported reclined rest, child’s pose if comfortable, ankle circles, gentle hamstring stretching, and breathing that tells your body it can soften.
Examples that really do count
Two minutes of stretching while your tea steeps counts. A walk around the block counts. Chair yoga between clients counts. Standing at your barre for a few pliés counts. Five minutes on your walking pad counts. A few mindful movements before bed absolutely counts.
Movement should match your energy, not punish your body
Some days you want yoga. Some days you want a stronger workout. Some days you need softness, mobility, and breath. There is wisdom in choosing the kind of movement your body can actually receive that day instead of forcing yourself into a version of wellness that does not fit.
Permission slip: you do not need an hour, a gym, or perfect motivation to care for your body. Start with what you can do today.
Five minutes builds trust
Small movement teaches your body that care is available. It helps you stay in relationship with yourself. Over time, those five-minute moments can add up to greater familiarity with your body and more confidence in taking care of yourself.
So if all you have is five minutes, use the five minutes. It still counts.
